In
December 2007 I traveled to Wutun. I was told that every man in this village
was born to be a Thangka painter. In fact, more than half of the traditionally
painted Thangkas kept in various Tibetan monasteries are the work of Wutun
artists. Other artistic forms of
Thangka making such as embroidery, applique, and water color are also very porpular here.

In May
2010, the Chinese government officially announced that Kashgar in Xinjiang
Uygur Autonomous Region was to be a “Special Economic Zone.” To celebrate this
significant event our editors selected a group of photos taken in Kashgar eight
years ago by the famous photographer Zhang Tongsheng and local photographers.
These photographers worked together for more than two months, traveling around
Kashgar and capturing magnificent images of this place. They went up to the
plateau five times and into the desert on three occasions, taking pictures and
writing journals all the way. Revisiting these journals now induces the
sensation of actually standing in Kashgar, listening to how the land sings to
you.
