Special Reports
In December 2007 I traveled to Wutun. I was told that every man in this village was born to be a Thangka painter. In fact, more than half of the traditionally painted Thangkas kept in various Tibetan monasteries are the work of Wutun artists. Other artistic forms of Thangka making such as embroidery, applique, and water color are also very porpular here.

Cultural Heritage
When a drum tower is seen, you can be pretty sure that you will soon find yourself among the Dong people.
The drum tower is always the tallest and most eye-catching structure in any ethnic Dong village. According to one of their folksongs from ancient times, a drum tower was the first structure to be built when Dong people decided to settle in a new place.

Discovery
Toward the end of 2007, news came that Chinese archeologists had found the remains of an ancient city believed to have existed 5,300 years ago. The latest finding added brilliance to the Lianzhu culture, proving that the early Chinese living in the area, while producers of rice and jade artifacts, were also capable of building a city 2.9 million square meters in area, four times as large as the world-renowned Forbidden City in Beijing.
Some experts suggest that the entire history of the Chinese civilization may have to be rewritten if theories about the recent findings prove correct.

In Chinese classics, there is frequent mention of a small matriarchal kingdom believed to have existed some 1,000 years ago. The kingdom is known as "Dongnu" - the Chinese character dong meaning "east" and nu, "women."

Kaleidoscopic China
There is an old Chinese saying, "people take food as heaven." It is an expression of people's love of food. A well prepared dish should have pleasing colour, aroma and flavour. Cooking has occupied a lofty position in Chinese culture throughout history. The great Chinese philosopher Lao Zi once said, "Governing a great nation is much like cooking a small fish."
