    Less known, but possibly as fascinating, are the ethnic groups living deep in the mountains virtually without access to the outside world. The cultural traditions of some of these groups have remained largely intact despite encroaching civilization.

One of the remotest ethnic groups is the Lahu people, who believe that their ancient ancestors were born out of a gourd.
