Yu Qingcheng's clay sculptures capture the essence of life in the countryside with a simple, rustic and honest style. His works are full of life and wisdom, bold and humorous, expressing joy or pain. His style is not against tradition, but classic with a twist.

Many talented artists like Vincent van Gogh have their genius recognized by the world only after their death. Chinese contemporary artist Yu Qingcheng is one of those who can taste the sweet fruits of success during their lifetime.

Spring of inspiration

Born and growing up in the rural area, Yu says the images of farmers are his favorites. "It is easy to make a sculpture of a farmer," the artist exclaimed. The country's ancient civilization, vast land area and agrarian culture are the major source of inspiration for the artist. Yu's works deals with many aspects of country life and vividly reveals insights into the age-old civilization and its people.

Actually Yu knew nothing about Western art at the very beginning. He used local clay and built his figures using the same techniques used to build the terracotta soldiers of Xi'an. He hopes his art will also last a millennium.
