Shimenkan is a township in the northwest of Guizhou province that is hard to find on most maps.  But in the beginning of the 20th century, mail from Europe could easily find its way there with the letter or parcel simply addressed  "Shimenkan China." It was well known both in China and abroad as "the sacred place of the ethnic Miao cultural renaissance" and "the supreme cultural district of the southwest ethnic Miao group."  It's hard to imagine how several dozens of churches, schools, hospitals, orphanage and a cloth weaving factory were erected on top of mountains in that area.  More unimaginable is that the Miao people there have a unique written language, created for them by an English missionary named Samuel Pollard.  The language is referred to as the "Pollard Script" in Western countries.

Doubtlessly, Naren Abi was a real person. She had a real name. There are historical documents recording her exploits. She had offspring who survive to this today. However, she was also someone in between a human and a God. Legend has it that she had inexhaustible magic power,  that she founded the practice of bonesetting in traditional Mongolian medicine and was herself a bonesetter with her name known throughout the Mongolian region and even in the whole of the Qing Dynasty.
