The South-Central University for Nationalities, situated in Wuhan, Hubei Province, is the most successful institute
of Nushu study, because of its close proximity to the location where the Nushu
originated. Gong Zhebing, ÊÊwho began his teaching career at the university in the 1980s, is the foremost
scholar--he was the first to study the culture--in the Nushu. He advocated
the establishment of the university’s Nushu Study Center. It was the first,
and most successful, Nushu institute established in China. The center, cooperating
with the scientific and technological branch of China Central Televivion,
has produced a 100-minute special program on this subject. Prof. Xie Zhimin
and associate professor Wang Lihua, both of the center, compiled a Nushu-NuShu
audio electronic dictionary, reportedly the first of its kind in the world.
It includes more than 2,100 Nushu characters. The dictionary facilitates the
teaching and editing of Nushu characters.
