and was a pioneer of humanism and vulgarization of Tibetan Buddhism. He lived
a short but legendary and colorful life, but was full of legendary color.

Held in Kunming On August 18-23, 2003, the International Symposium on Ethnic Culture and Globalization
was held in Kunming, Yunnan Province. More than 150 participants from the
United States, UK, Germany, Thailand and 15 Chinese provinces and autonomous
regions as well as Taiwan and Macao attended the symposium. Discussions were held on the following five special subjects: “globalization
and cultural diversity”, “cultural industry and the development and utilization
of ethnic cultures’, “ecological environment and ethnic cultures”, “Chinese
cultures and world cultures’and “ethnic cultures from different visual angles”.
Scholars at the symposium reached a common understanding that the protection
of traditional ethnic cultures is critical to maintaining cultural diversity
around the world under increasing globalization. If an ethnic group gives
up its ownculture, it will be
without any cultural flavor and lose its position as a unique ethnic group
as well as its political influence in the world. Protection of traditional
culture does not mean simple inheritance and preservation, but involves both
protection and innovation. The purpose of innovation is for better protection.
Without innovation and evolution, the traditional culture of any ethnic group
will eventually lose its vitality and become outdated to the modern society.
The participants, in combination with their own expertise and long-term research
and survey, made in-depth and constructive opinions and proposals regarding
how to appropriately adjust the relationship between ethnic cultures and globalization
and how to deal with the impact of foreign cultures on local cultures. Ancient Dongba Documentation of Naxi Successfully Enters into
