A Dose of Coolant
--Human-based
sports tradition and modern competitive sports
Article By Cui Lequan
The value of a sport lies not in whether or not it
can become an Olympic event. The traditional sports of many nations in the world
have nothing to do with Olympics, but their cultural values can never be ignored.
The sports of China's minority groups embody the spirit
of harmony between man and nature and man and society and respects personality.
They feature strong and unique self-entertainment, artistic appeal and mass
participation. Players do not take win or loss very seriously. They of course
feel happy at victories but they do not feel sad either for being defeated.
Win or loss is regarded as an experience and an ordeal that is good for self-improvement.
This is a cultural tradition full of humanist spirit. This intrinsic spirit
is a useful remedy to occidental competitive sports and its concomitant violence
in the competition arena, doping and bribery.
