If we say
that Tibetan costumes in bus-tsang (the central area which regards Lhasa
and Shigstse Cities as its center) look elegant, poised and stratified and
those in Amdo display some waves in perfect harmony and magnificence, the
clothing in Khams looks loose and rugged, suggesting heroism and prowess.
Khams areas
include Chamdo in Tibet, Gyushu and Mgolog in Qinghai Province, Dkardzes
and Abe in Sichuan Province, and Bdechen in Yunnan Province. The different
natural geography and regional culture in Khams from other Tibetan areas
give rise to a set of dresses unique to Khams, which is known as Khams-chas
(the dresses of Khams) and is very special type in all the Tibetan costumes.
The Khams
costumes feature brilliant colors, which blend the pursuit of religious
belief, wealth and beauty. The dresses and ornaments worn by a rich girl
could be worth 10,000 yuan, or even up to 100,000 yuan. It is not unusual
that members of one family would wear costumes worth up to one million yuan,
which is all the wealth the family has earned laboriously from generation
