Recollections:Tibetan Traditional Clothes and Ornaments (3)

If we say that Tibetan costumes in bus-tsang (the central area which regards Lhasa and Shigstse Cities as its center) look elegant, poised and stratified and those in Amdo display some waves in perfect harmony and magnificence, the clothing in Khams looks loose and rugged, suggesting heroism and prowess.

Khams areas include Chamdo in Tibet, Gyushu and Mgolog in Qinghai Province, Dkardzes and Abe in Sichuan Province, and Bdechen in Yunnan Province. The different natural geography and regional culture in Khams from other Tibetan areas give rise to a set of dresses unique to Khams, which is known as Khams-chas (the dresses of Khams) and is very special type in all the Tibetan costumes.

The Khams costumes feature brilliant colors, which blend the pursuit of religious belief, wealth and beauty. The dresses and ornaments worn by a rich girl could be worth 10,000 yuan, or even up to 100,000 yuan. It is not unusual that members of one family would wear costumes worth up to one million yuan, which is all the wealth the family has earned laboriously from generation to generation. Such a kind of dresses goes in conformity with the nomadic ideal to turn all the property into jewelry and the ornaments made from gold or silver so that the valuables can be carried as decoration in their frequent mobility...

Tibetan women are most capable of displaying the glamour of their necklaces.

A full costume often weighs a few dozen kilograms. But such a weight is bearable for the sake of beauty.
