I Always Leave an Unembroidered Space  in My Work

   Embroidery has been part of Miao nationality women’s life. However, they always leave a tiny space unembroidered in every piece they work on. They believe in that if they finish a piece of work completely their life would be over, too.
   
Tailoring skill is an important test for the Miao women given to them by social usages. In addition, it is a skill that they have to master in their life. Only when they pass this “test”, could women set up their image and status both at home and in society.
    Miao embroidery is one of Chinese embroidery schools with unique characteristics. It has various stitching methods, such as flat embroidery, braid embroidery, knitting, winding, crepe embroidery, appliqu¨¦, hand-drawn and piling. Beautiful embroidery patterns include Chinese unicorn, dragon and phoenix, as well as common patterns such as worm, fish, flowers and grass, peaches and guava. Embroidery can also be grouped as flat and stump work.
   
In Laotun and Yanjiao villages in Taijiang, Guizhou Province, villagers’ 80% earnings are embroidery and as a folk workmanship, the ancient embroidery has held an important place in costume art.
