deep walking round Mount Kawa Gebo for at least seven days to pray for good
luck under divine protection.
Of the 13 peaks, Mount Mianchumu is most beautiful in shape and, in the mind’s
eye of local Tibetans, is the “goddess of the sea”. This “goddess of the
sea”, so to speak, is God Kawa Gebo’s wife. Hidden behind the “goddess”is
their son, Mount Luolazheng Guigong, or the “mountain of the red-faced god”.
Ethnic Tibetans believe that all the 13 peaks are holy. Beside these beautiful
tales about it, Mount Kawa Gebo is famous for a string of glaciers and fountains
at its foot.
Man has scaled on top of Mt. Chonmo Langma, or Everest as it is known in the
West, which is the “peak” of the world. Mount Kawa Gebo, however, seems
unconquerable even though it is much lower. All attempts to scale it proved
futile, the earliest dating back to 1902, by a British expedition. In January
1991, a team of 17 Chinese and Japanese climbers went missing while trying
to climb the mountain. The news shocked the world.
life and folkways, people here have always lived in perfect harmony. The local
history has been void of either ethnic or religious strife, with the Han
and Tibetan schools of Buddhism and Christianity always in peaceful coexistence.
Probably now other area in the world features so perfect a combination of
geological, biological and cultural diversity as this Sanjiang area, which
we believe will become even more beautiful now that it is already on the
UNESCO List of World Heritage.
