CULTURAL DIVERSITY

A cultural diversity adds fame and value to the area with three rivers running abreast, which encompasses the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Lijiang Prefecture and Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture in northwest Yunnan Province. The area is home to more than 800,000 people belonging to 16 different ethnic groups, of whom those of ethnic minority groups account for 86.6%. Though speaking different languages, worshipping different religions and following different styles of life and folkways, people here have always lived in perfect harmony. The local history has been void of either ethnic or religious strife, with the Han and Tibetan schools of Buddhism and Christianity always in peaceful coexistence. Probably now other area in the world features so perfect a combination of geological, biological and cultural diversity as this Sanjiang area, which we believe will become even more beautiful now that it is already on the UNESCO List of World Heritage.
