In ancient times, the forefathers of the Tibetan ethnic group lived among
lofty snow-covered mountains and on wild grasslands. Nature on the Qinghai-Tibet
Plateau is beautiful but harsh. The rigorous climate could bring disaster
and death at any time. Such a world led its inhabitants to create various
images and fantasies, believing in the existence of supernatural magic powers which dominated
everything in the world.
The Tibetan people regarded the towering mountains as ladders to Heaven, and
the crystal-clear lakes as gateways to the dragon world.
Among the first gods of the Tibetans were a dragon god, year god and praising
god. The dragon god lives on mountains, among rocks and forests. He may
protect mankind or bring disasters to mankind. The year god acted in high
mountains and gorges. It is easy to be anger. So people always take care
when they pass through high mountains, snow picks and deep forests. Yet
the respected praising god is deferent from others likes a devil that has
three heads and six hands lived in the sky. After vanquished by Master Lotus
this god was put in temple to be as a god to protect the law and spreads
Buddhism.
In the vast area of Tibet, there are mountain gods, water gods, wind gods
and thunder gods. Every village has its own gods. And each mountain, river
and lake has its own beautiful legend.
This is the cultural soil which produced Gesar.
Shi Taian, a France Tibetan consult once said: “Many phenomenon in Ten Thousand
Gods Temple and folk legends made us realized that Gesar of historic epics
came into being from a very accurate and well-defined content. Warriors,
God of Wealth and the world chief etc., are the main stay of this content.
